What a unexpected surprise to run into Olympic Gold Medalist Tommie Smith and his wife Delois at the American Library Association annual conference! I had the unbelievable honor of having both Tommie and Olympic Icon Dick Fosbury present my induction into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame in 2009. It’s a night I will never forget. He and Delois are a powerhouse of giving back to their communities, young athletes and standing up for racial injustice. Tommie was promoting his book for youth “Victory. Stand! Raising my Fist for Justice.” They are an inspiration to anyone who meets them, and they will always hold a special place in my heart.
